Home Ground Habitats
Site visit to Homeground Habitats in Novato, a California Natives demonstration garden.

Harvesting
Garden harvest photographs, an antidote for winter doldrums.
Sakura
We came for sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom season, awaiting the bud burst as I entered the beginning of my third trimester. The whole country waited in anticipation of the first blooms.

Cut flowers
Yesterday I harvested our first calla lily. It marks a tipping point, the moment that our succession of flowers (both wild and cultivated) begin peeking their heads out of their buds.

Orchard Guild
Planning and progress for our orchard guild plants.

Horseshoe Chair
Custom design and construction of a horseshoe chair, inspired by Danish lines and my grandfather’s favorite armchair.

Permaculture
Shortly after moving into our home, my husband and I enrolled in a permaculture design course. Over the course of sixteen weeks and various (detailed) assignments, we applied our learnings to our own particular corner of the earth, studying the sun and the wind, the waterways, the usage of the space, and the opportunities contained within it.

Prototyping
Physical design-build work always reminds me of the value of prototyping before building: from low-fi sketching to model building, to functional full-scale prototypes.

Record Console
Custom design and build for an oak record console and “now spinning” display.

Yestermorrow
A dreamy design/build intensive at Yestermorrow in Waitsfield Vermont.

Sheet mulching
Adventures in sheet mulching an arid, weedy area at the bottom of our property where we established our orchard.

Loam
Hands-on soil testing and percolation testing throughout the garden.

Lane Coffee Table
A fun weekend project refurbishing a Lane coffee table that I found on Craigslist.

Establishing a Garden
Establishing an edible garden is an act of optimism: that things will grow, that you will have time to tend it, that you’ll figure out exactly how to grow things that you have only a vague notion about.
