Establishing a Garden
Establishing an edible garden is an act of optimism: that plants will grow, that you will have time to tend it, that you’ll figure out exactly how to grow things that you have only a vague notion about. Since establishing our garden nearly four years ago we’ve put up (and removed) deer fencing, built (and removed) complex tomato architecture, nearly killed some highbush blueberries, changed our mind about blackberry canes, and learned what it means to “cut and come again.” Our 4x4 beds are still trucking along, though of course we might build them differently now if we were starting all over again. But gardens are nothing if not iterative. We have time.
